A stroll through the heart of the village
Discovering its history and heritage
Stroll through the pedestrian heart of Saint-Paul de Vence
Start at Place Charles de Gaulle (the pétanque court), located at the entrance of the village, just below the ramparts. As you wander through the squares and alleyways, history unfolds through around twenty interpretive heritage panels. Historic landmarks, notable residences, village life of the past, memorable events… a new heritage trail now maps out the rich legacy of Saint-Paul de Vence.
Shaded by century-old plane trees, this is the place where locals of Saint-Paul love to gather. On this legendary square, Yves Montand and Lino Ventura once played fiercely contested games of pétanque. It is bordered by the Café de la Place perfect for relaxing and taking in the lively atmosphere and by the iconic Colombe d’Or, which welcomed some of the greatest artists of the 20th century: Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Folon…
The ramparts of Saint-Paul, built by order of François I, have remained intact since their construction. The gate is flanked by a 14th-century machicolated tower, a remnant of the medieval fortifications.
Next, step through the gate of the cemetery. This is where painter Marc Chagall rests, having spent the final years of his life in Saint-Paul, from 1966 to 1985. He is buried alongside his wife Vava and her brother, Michel.
Exit the cemetery, pass back through the Porte de Nice, and follow the Rue Grande. Let yourself be enchanted by the charm of these houses, which still bear traces of their former splendor. As you stroll along Rue Grande, take the time to browse artist studios, painting galleries, boutique shops, and stores filled with artisanal products.
Its intimate atmosphere and the gentle murmur of its fountain invite you to pause for a moment. Take the time to stop, even just to admire the arched ogee doorway at No. 9, or to observe the ground floor of the Cherry boutique, which was once clearly a stable. The village holds many charming surprises and discoveries, waiting to be found as you wander its winding streets.

Nature and Culture in the Heart of Provence
Exploring the roads of the hinterland is a wonderful journey through the landscapes of Provence, featuring authentic villages perched on rocky hills, vineyards, olive groves, and fig orchards.
Surrounded by 16th-century ramparts, the old village of Saint-Paul offers an authentic and timeless stroll. As you wander through its cobbled streets, you’ll discover flower-adorned stone houses, ancient fountains, shady little squares lined with plane trees, and charming artisan shops. Every corner seems to tell a story between Provençal traditions and artistic heritage. Along the way, breathtaking views of the valley and the distant Mediterranean punctuate the journey.
Located at the top of the village, this 12th-century Romanesque and Baroque church is an architectural gem. Listed as a historic monument, it features a nave with Gothic vaults, 17th-century altarpieces, and a sacristy adorned with Italian woodwork. The church bears witness to the village’s spiritual and communal importance since the Middle Ages. Visitors can also admire remarkable religious artworks in an intimate and peaceful setting.
This picturesque path connects the village center to the Maeght Foundation, winding along the heights of Saint-Paul. Ideal for a peaceful 15 to 20-minute walk, it leads through typically Mediterranean scenery olive trees, umbrella pines, and the fragrant scents of the garrigue. The landscape gradually opens onto the surrounding hills, with the sea as a backdrop and the Mercantour mountain range on the horizon. A wonderful opportunity to breathe deeply and enjoy a gentle escape between art and nature.
